Fair Play Orphanage | 2002 – 2005
From 2002 to 2005 Altrincham Methodist Church took a team of volunteers to work with STEPS Romania. They helped refurbish the four children’s floors of the Fair Play Orphanage, in Constanta. Each year several teams of volunteers went, at their own expense, to work on the project.
We tiled and fitted out the toilet, shower and wash rooms on each floor.
We fitted doors and decorated all of the bedrooms and halls.
We created a dining room, activity room, workshop, sewing room, medical room and a computer room.
We paid for the roof to be re-covered, the outside walls to be sealed, insulated and painted and all of the windows double glazed.
Ziurel Welfare Centre | 2006 – 2008
A Romanian charity ‘FAST’ is working hard to help the Roma people in the villages near Sacele, Brasov. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, Altrincham Methodist Church took a team of volunteers out to the project with STEPS. They helped FAST construct and equip a welfare centre for Roma children.
In 2005, before we got involved, FAST had acquired and old boiler house, dismantled the tall brick chimney and started clearing the inside.
By the end of 2008, it looked a little different!
Roma School Workshop | 2009 – 2010
The headmaster of the large Roma school in Garcin, Brasov, asked us to build a workshop so that the children could learn woodworking skills, and so stand a better chance of finding a job and helping their families out of poverty when they leave school. Teams from Altrincham Methodist Church and Swan Bank Church went out to work on this project between 2009 and 2010.
Roma Village Kindergarden | 2010 – 2012
Between 2010 and 2012 teams of volunteers from Swan Bank Church and the STEPS management team to help build and extension on the Roma Village Kindergarden in Slobozia. The aim was to build and extra room for the kindergarden and sleeping accommodation upstairs for a teacher to stay in. It took three years, and a lot of trips out to the village but the process was finally complete at the end of 2012!
Summer Camp | 2013
The summer camp in Pincau was one of two projects STEPS ran in 2013. This one in particular was a mens’ trip organised by MEN Alive, which involve a number of churches in Stoke on Trent. We helped to build an external building as part of the summer camp, to be used for activities.
Fairplay | 2014 – 2016
From 2014 to 2016 we’ve taken a number of teams out from local churches and in partnership with the Methodist church to work on the following; New bedrooms for around 40 children, sprucing up the bedrooms with some paint and adding colour with new duvets and curtains. The playground and football pitch got a splash of colour to make it look a lot more like a children’s area. And, not forgetting brightening up all the corridors and the dining room too!
